The holidays are hectic enough to make us parents cry on many days. And it can be even more stressful for your little one! With so many fun and new experiences, as parents, we often want our child to "take in everything" during the holidays. But it's all these experiences that cause your little one distress! Those extra events while very fun, festive, and memory -making can often times cause us to put off a nap, try to eat earlier or later, or have us simply overlook our little one's subtle cues. So bear in mind, that your little one loves and DEPENDS on the comfort of their daily schedule.
With that
in mind, here are a few tips and tricks to enjoy some extra holiday festivities
while limiting disruption to your little one's typical routine:
1. Try to
pick activities that occur during your child's natural playtime. Taking
your little one to an event that occurs during regular bedtime (nap or
nighttime) is often a recipe for a very fussy little one.
2. If an
event will cause a regular mealtime to be moved, bring along snacks to keep
your little one satisfied. Just don't forget a drink
too, as they are often overlooked in the wintertime and dehydration occurs in
the cold temperatures also! So be sure to include plenty of liquids for your
little ones when out and about!
3. If at a
family event that is busier and louder than your typical day at home, be sure
to give your little one an opportunity for a break from all the noise and
activities. Babies and toddlers are especially susceptible to becoming
overwhelmed at events like this. They do not have the ability to leave and get
some "quiet time" on their own, they need parental assistance with
this. So offer some quiet cuddle time in a separate bedroom, or a quiet, short
car ride or even taking a walk can be helpful. Any of these can give your
little one a chance to regroup and be ready for more family fun!
4. Before
heading out for any activities, events, festivities, always remember the
acronym: H.A.L.T.!
Make sure
no one is:
· Hungry
· Angry
· Lonely
· Tired
These needs are easily met while
at home, but can be a bit of a struggle when out and about. Having these needs
met before leaving the comforts of your home is always helpful to your little
one (and your own sanity as a parent)!
So while it's great to do new and
fun things, just be sure NOT to skip those naps, push back mealtime, or any
other "regularly scheduled routines".
Your little one will thank you with smiles,
instead of tears.
