Despite all the books you've read
and all the advice your family and friends gave you-everything you knew seems
to be a distant memory when you first come home with your new baby. Panic sets
in as you wonder how to get your baby to sleep, how to best to feed him/her, or
whether or not you are doing the whole diaper thing right.
So keep cool, calm, and remember
these few important truths:
- Newborns often love being swaddled
to sleep because the swaddle mimics the snug feeling they had in the womb.

remember swaddling safety: use a lightweight blanket and swaddle baby in
little to no clothing to avoid overheating your baby!
- Feeding is not always an easy
thing to do! There will be a grace period while you figure out what your
baby needs. While it is said that "Breast is Best", it doesn't
always work for every family, and just because you may need to use
formula, that doesn't mean you can't also try both: a mix of formula
feeding and breast milk. No matter which method you use, remember that you
can always rely on your baby's pediatrician to assist you when
dealing with any feeding difficulties.
- Parents often wonder...are my
baby's diapers "normal"? To answer this, keep these things in
mind:
- Baby should have
at least 1 wet diaper in 24 hrs (minimum). Call your doctor if baby
doesn't do that.
- How often baby poops or has a "BM" (Bowel Movement), depends on what baby eats. Most formula feed babies poop everyday. On the other hand, it's not uncommon for breastfeed babies to go a few days to a week without pooping.
